In ‘Breaking’ various elements of newcasts from CNN and Fox news are re-edited to expand and elongate the silences in between the delivery of the news itself. The recreation of looping backgrounds and transitions, removal of text from the chyrons, and re-editing of the new anchors themselves, all serve to create unpunctured experiences of expectation, building an unresolved tension that reflects the age of constantly urgent news bulletins. In such uniquely close-reading and editing of the prosaic spectacle of cable television news, ‘Breaking’ explores how silence and audience expectation can create a subtly humorous experience for viewers, and prompt a different and more critical approach to news watching.
